14th Street / Union Square Subway Station Rehabilitation New York, NY
|
The 14th Street/Union Square Station Complex is the third most heavily used in the New York City transit system. Three different subway lines converge below Union Square Park. Lee Harris Pomeroy Associates was hired by the NY Transit Authority to provide a master plan upgrading the entire station to simplify and consolidate circulation and create a true concourse level focusing on safety.
Our work included design for the rehabilitation of all station access points above and below grade as well as its coordination with the existing historic Union Square Park; all station finishes and signage; waterproofing and structural alterations as required; and replacing all lighting, plumbing, mechanical, and public address systems. Two of the lines will be made accessible to the disabled with new elevators and the elimination of barriers. Mechanical ventilation will be added to the platform levels of all three lines. We are also working with the Department of Parks to create a new and expanded park area. We are collaborating with Mary Miss, the Arts for Transit artist whose work is focusing on historical and inner workings of the station. This work will be a common thread throughout the entire complex. To accommodate the accelerated schedule, all design and construction documents were completed in one year. Construction bids, for this $40 million project, were received in January 1995 and all were on or under budget. The station will remain in operation through construction which is scheduled to be completed in 1999. |
