Fulton Street Pedestrian Mall
and Transitway

Brooklyn, NY

This twelve-block transitway and pedestrian mall extends through the heart of the Brooklyn downtown shopping district, from Flatbush Avenue to Borough Hall. The project, which began with subsurface investigations, developed a pedestrian mall by narrowing the roadway by 18 feet and limiting peak hour vehicle traffic to buses and emergency vehicles.

This project was the first element and catalyst for the redevelopment of Downtown Brooklyn. This lead to the revitalization of the downtown, the development of MetroTech, and rejuvenation of cultural, commercial and residential life of the Borough of Brooklyn.

Street furniture and equipment which was specially designed for the project includes large, free-standing canopies, vendors' kiosks, directory and telephone kiosks, and high mast lighting. The graphics program, which was also designed for this project, consists of informational, directional, and street signage.

A joint venture with STV/Seelye, Stevenson, Value & Knecht, Fulton Mall and Transitway has been awarded the prestigious Albert S. Bard Civic Award for Excellence in Architecture and Urban Design.
